The Ajuda Botanical Garden, founded in 1768, was designed by Italian botanist Domingos Vandelli, who transferred the botanical garden to the Portuguese capital from his home city of Padua.
It was the first Botanical Garden in Portugal, designed for the purpose of maintaining, studying and collecting as many plant species as possible. It currently plays host to over 1640 botanical specimens from all over the world, including a Dracaena draco that is around 400 years old and served as inspiration for illustrator João Fazenda when designing a commemorative circulation coin to mark this anniversary.
